Devín Castle was destroyed by Napoleon in 1809. Before this, Devín had been an important military stronghold since the Roman Empire. The earliest archeological records go back to about 5000 B.C. It is situated on a rocky cliff at the confluence of the Danube and Morava Rivers, about 13 km from Bratislava.

The castle began to become more prominant in the Slovak conciousness after 1936, when Ľudovít Štúr led the first patriotic trip up to the site of the castle. Of course, during World War II, the castle was not in use, but afterwords, visits quickly resumed.
